Membership Website Development

Member logins, gated content and recurring subscriptions, built around how your membership actually works

Built Around How Your Membership Works

A membership site is a different animal from a shop. You're not selling a thing once and moving on — you're giving people an account, letting them in to something, and taking a payment that comes round again every month or every year. Whoooop Ltd builds membership and subscription sites around how your organisation actually runs: who gets access to what, when their renewal falls, and what they see once they're logged in. We've worked in full-stack development for over 15 years, so the login, the gated content and the billing are built to hold together, not bolted on from three plugins that half-agree.

When a Membership Site Makes Sense

Membership comes up for all sorts of organisations, and the reasons rarely look the same twice. A few of the common ones:

  • A club, gym or society where people pay a subscription and expect a card, a login and members-only pages
  • A professional body or trade association with a directory, resources and renewals to keep track of
  • Someone selling access to courses, guides or a library of content rather than a physical product
  • A business adding a paid tier — premium articles, tools or a community — on top of a public site
  • An organisation running its membership on a spreadsheet and a stack of renewal reminders, and feeling it

What Goes Into a Membership Site

Accounts and secure logins

Members sign up, log in and manage their own details. Passwords handled properly, optional two-factor, and a sensible "forgotten my login" flow so you're not fielding those by email.

Gated content and tiers

Pages, files and features that only open up once someone's a paid-up member — and, where you need it, different levels of access so a premium tier sees more than a basic one.

Recurring subscriptions

Monthly or annual billing through Stripe, with renewals, upgrades and downgrades handled, so the money side runs itself instead of becoming a job on the first of the month.

A members' area worth logging in for

One place where a member sees what they're entitled to, updates their card, downloads their invoice and checks when their membership runs out — without emailing you to ask.

Directories and community

If your membership has a public-facing side — a member directory, profiles, a private discussion area — that gets built in rather than hung off a separate service that never quite matches.

Admin that keeps you in control

A clear view of who's a member, who's lapsed and who's due to renew, plus the ability to comp an account, refund someone or change a tier without coming back to us each time.

Recurring Billing Without the Headaches

The recurring payment is what makes a membership site a membership site, and it's also where the awkward edge cases live. We build the billing on Stripe and handle the parts people forget about until they bite: a card that expires mid-subscription, a payment that fails and needs retrying, a member who upgrades halfway through the month, someone who cancels and should keep access until the period they've paid for runs out. Renewal reminders and receipts go out automatically. If a payment lapses, access steps down in a way you've decided on, not a way that surprises an annoyed member. The aim is that the billing is something you check, not something you firefight.

Off-the-Shelf Platform or a Custom Build?

We won't talk you into a custom build you don't need. If your membership is simple — one tier, a bit of gated content, a straightforward monthly fee — a ready-made membership platform may well cover it, and paying a monthly fee for that can be the sensible call. We're happy to help you choose one and wire it into your site. A bespoke build earns its place when the ready-made options keep fighting you: unusual membership rules, tiers that don't fit a template, a directory or member tools that have to match the rest of your site, links into systems you already run, or simply wanting to own your member data and not hand over a slice of every subscription. At that point it's really a focused piece of web application development, so everything on that page applies here too.

Joining It Up With What You Already Run

A membership site almost never stands on its own. It needs to take payment, send the right email at the right moment, and keep your member records in step with whatever you already use to run the organisation. We connect the membership to the tools around it — payment provider, email and newsletter platform, and any CRM or back-office system you depend on — so a new member isn't something you re-key in three places. That joining-up is its own piece of work; there's more on how we approach it on our API development and integration page. If members or your team need to publish and edit the gated content themselves, that's where a content management system fits in. And where you're also selling one-off products alongside the subscription, the checkout side overlaps with our e-commerce development work.

Why Whoooop for a Membership Site

  • 15+ years of full-stack experience, so logins, access control and billing are built to behave under real use
  • Genuine integration work behind it — Stripe for recurring payments, email platforms and CRMs joined up
  • Honest advice on whether a custom build or a ready-made membership platform is the better value for you
  • Happy to add a members' area to a site we didn't originally build, not only to a brand-new one
  • We stay on after launch — the site can roll into ongoing maintenance rather than being left to drift
